X-Ray Badge and Dosimetry Information
How does dosimetry service work?
After you fill out order forms with www.RadiationBadge.com we will send you the radiation badges to wear quarterly, bi-monthly or monthly. We will send you a new shipment of badges when the time comes and you will send us the badges you have been exposed. We will receive them, read the badges in our lab and generate a report which is then sent to you. That process repeats annually.
What is dosimetry all about?
Dosimetry is the measuring of ionizing radiation and radioactivity exposure with the help of TLD (thermoluminescent dosimeters). It's a highly scientific process with algorithms and expensive equipment but simply put our TLD readers can accurately measure the exposure of radiation to a dosimetry badge. Our badges record shallow tissue dose, deep tissue dose, dose to your eyes and neutrons.
Why do we use X-ray badges for dosimetry?
Radiation detecting ensures that people like you are not overexposed to high levels of ionizing radiation or radioactivity while in the workplace. The governing bodies have set limits of radiation exposure.
What are the radiation exposure limits allowed by the government?
-Total effective dose equivalent 5,000 millirem
-Shallow tissue dose 50,000 millirem
-Eye lens 15000 millirem
-Pregnant employee 500 millirem
What is the "Control Badge"?
There will always be one control badge with each shipment of badges. The control badge has one sole purpose and that is to record any exposure during the shipping process. Any exposure during transit to and from our office to yours will be subtracted from that batch of badges. While in your facility, keep the control badge away from any radiation sources and keep it away from any exposures. For example: Let's say the post office x-rays your package of radiation badges during shipment and all the badges receive 10 millirem, including the control badge. When we read your badges we will see that the control badge was exposed 10 millirem, therefore we will subtract that from the readings of all your badges in that shipment. This ensures there is not a false reading on that shipment of badges.
How do I know if I have been overexposed by radiation?
In the rare event of a possible overexposure we are strictly mandated to contact you directly within 24 hours of reading your dosimeter badge. Our radiation detection company reads the x-ray badges within 24 hours of receiving them at our manufacturing facility.
*Always take proper precautions and wear your personal protective equipment when dealing with radiation sources.
